Canada Day at Branch #122 of the Royal Canadian Legion started about 7:30 AM  with the volunteers filtering in to start the grills for breakfast and do any last minute tasks. They had worked late the night before getting everything ready for the celebration. They wondered how the turnout was going to be this year.

The doors opened at 9:00 but the people started coming in at 8:30. Conversation and laughter filled the building as the volunteers were hurrying to keep the steam tables and coffee pots filled.

The tables outside were filling up and the people streamed in and out filling their plates with fresh pancakes and their cups with coffee or soda. Pictured here are two of our long time members and local citizens, Syd Fuez and Thelma Barlow with Branch #122 President Kathy Anderson in the middle. Both Thelma and Syd have done their share of volunteering at the legion and around town. It is time for them to sit back and enjoy themselves.

No sooner was the breakfast over when it was time to fire up the new BBQ, purchased for the Canada Day Celebration, but with plans to offer Friday Nite BBQ's a couple times a month throughout the summer. The guys flipping burgers were overwhelmed with both the number of people that showed up and the politeness of the people. The burgers were going straight onto buns as they were done and nobody was complaining about the wait as the line grew longer. In fact, numerous people came back after they had their burger and thanked them.

Then the Golden Fire Dept came to the rescue and wheeled their BBQ from up the street to give a hand. Thanks guys, it was much appreciated and helped set the tone for the day.

The success of the bouncy tent was measured by the smiles of the children. It was non-stop action all afternoon. I was told by the volunteer face painter that as soon as she painted the faces of a couple of teenage girls, they immediately volunteered to help her.

The biggest thanks go out to the Community of Golden for coming out and helping us celebrate the birth of our nation. HAPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE !!!

80th Anniversary Revitalization Project PDF Print E-mail
News - Latest

The Year 2011 marks 80 years that the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #122 has been in existence. From the beginning we have supported both our veterans and our community. The past few years has seen our membership fall due to a number of reasons.  It was decided that we need to do something to both commemorate the anniversary and revitalize our legion branch to ensure we continue to serve both our veterans and our community for another 80 years.

The "80th Anniversary Revitalization Project" was born. A couple of "brainstorming seasons resulted in a whole list  of projects and objectives that committee members thought important. We then, distilled that list down to what was practical and could be accomplished with the resources and people we have to draw on. From that list, we prioritized the projects and assigned them to different "phases" of the project. For an overview of our list, click  here.

Overview of "2020 - Phase one"

In phase one we will be replacing the existing 30 year plus roof over the lounge and dance floor as well as updating and freshening up the interior with a lighting upgrade, skylights and windows, and a new splash of paint. A new entrance way with wheelchair access doors is also in the works for this summer.

We will be having a "Revitalization Campaign" to keep track of how the branch portion of the project is supplied. Cash, Supplier discounts and Volunteer hours all provide are all calculated and added to the grant from The Columbia Basin Trust for $49,000.00 to finance the $80,000.00 Phase One  portion of the total $300,000.00 5 year 80th  Anniversary Revitalization Project.

This is a very ambitious project that will only succeed because of the dedication of our volunteers. When the tasks are identified that branch members are qualified to do, there will be lists posted and people called to help. The day to day business of the branch be  should be  interfered with very little.

A chart of the complete project is being worked on for display at the branch.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask any of the executive or contact us here

New Years Celebrations

DSCF2082resize2

About 40 people gathered to ring in the new year at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #122 New Years Eve to toast in the New Year and dance to the sounds of Cathy Neigel, who put her Karaoke away for the night, put on her "DJ Cathy" hat and regaled the crowd with party tunes from 1950's to today and everything in-between.  A special New Years Trivia kept everyone active throughout the evening. Snacks and cold cuts kept the partiers fueled up and able to laugh and  dance to the wee hours."
